Facebook’s parent company Meta has a feature for Messenger called Secret Conversation, which provides end-to-end encryption that doesn’t save chats to cloud servers. Now, these messages don’t have to be boring with blue/grey bubbles on a white background: Meta has introduced customizations for chats.

Different users in the Secret Conversation can set up nicknames, chat themes, custom emojis and reactions, and group photos – basically all features that made regular chats different and unique to each friend and group of friends.

Other changes include link preview, focus, and even bubbles on Android. That’s right: Messenger and Meta can’t read and store your messages, but they can still be viewed in the phone UI provided the app is running.

It is essential to remember that secret conversations are device-limited, which means that they can only appear on the smartphone or computer that has the encrypted connection set up. However, they are transferable using unique keys.

General end-to-end encryption is also being tested for default conversations, Meta revealed in the same press release. The company “has taken the time to build a talented team of engineers, cryptographers, designers and policy experts” who are all working on the new feature.

Over the coming months, more and more people will gradually see some of their chats upgraded with an extra layer of protection, and Messenger will notify every chat and thread.
