As expected, Sony finally unveiled the WF-1000XM5 ANC earphones a few hours ago – don’t confuse them with the already available WH-1000XM5 which are over-the-ear headphones.

The new earbuds come with “Sony’s biggest leap forward ever in noise cancellation” according to the company itself, thanks to three microphones on each earbud, including dual feedback mics, that improve low-frequency cancellation performance.

The earphones have Sony’s new V2 onboard processor at the helm, which “unlocks the potential of the QN2e HD Noise Canceling Processor.” These chips control the microphones, on both ears, to deliver “unprecedented noise canceling quality” that can adapt to your ever-changing environment.

Lower frequencies are reproduced better than on the WF-1000XM4 thanks to the new Dynamic Driver X, which enables wide frequency reproduction and clear vocals, while the “Noise Isolation Earbud Tips” have “an exclusive polyurethane foam material” that reduces noise in the high-frequency range.

The WF-1000XM5 supports high-resolution wireless audio via the LDAC codec, as well as DSEE Extreme for upscaling compressed music in real time. Plus, you also get 360 Reality Audio, complete with head tracking. By the way, AR games like Niantic’s Ingress get support for immersive sound using new sensors and spatial sound technology.

Sony promises the best call quality ever on these earphones, thanks to “an AI-powered noise reduction algorithm based on Deep Neural Network (DNN) processing and bone conduction sensors.” Your voice is meant to sound crystal clear and natural even in a noisy environment, and there is a wind noise reduction facility.

The WF-1000XM5 are 25% smaller and 20% lighter than the WF-1000XM4 and are designed with comfort in mind, having a shape modeled on the human ear. Sony promises an ergonomic design that allows for a secure and stable fit. You get four sizes for the foam tips.

Sound notifications are supported, as is linking your device with Spotify, Endel and Apple Music, to access your favorite music and soothing soundscapes. You can also set something to autoplay once you insert earphones. Adaptive Sound Control and Speak-to-chat make a return on the new earbuds, as does the ability to connect to two Bluetooth devices simultaneously.

The WF-1000XM5 is claimed to have an 8-hour battery life, with a 3-minute charge replenishing an hour of playback. Wireless charging is supported and the earphones are IPX4 splash resistant.

They will be available in black and silver from August for €319, £259, $299.
