Today is May 4th, best known to fans of the franchise as Star Wars Day. And to celebrate, Disney gave us our first taste of a real-life lightsaber that really retracts.
As far as we know, it cannot easily cut through the bulkheads or take off your child’s hand. But it has the realistic light tube design of the Black Series Lightsabers, and you can get the blade in and out at the touch of a button.
At this point, you probably have a simple question: “Where can I buy this?” Unfortunately, enthusiastic fans will have to wait for more details. Right now, all we really know is that this awesome lightsaber will be part of the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel experience opening near Disney World in 2022.
If you don’t already know, this hotel should be like a Star Wars version of Westworld (albeit with fewer robots). The guests actually stay for several days inside a recreation of a galactic star cruiser. There, they take on the role of a heroic Star Wars character and interact with other characters aboard the ship.
It’s not immediately clear whether guests can actually purchase the awesome lightsaber, although there will be a special area where guests can use it to train against a remote control (just like Luke Skywalker did in A new hope). The main rationale behind creating this new lightsaber is to create engaging movie-like moments that guests can experience in real life.
This implies that there will be familiar faces aboard the stellar cruiser. Notably, the short preview shows someone dressed like Rey wielding a lightsaber. But we’ll have to wait a little longer to find out more about the era in which the experience is set and the characters involved. And of course, to find out more about this fantastic new lightsaber.
