Last night, Fortnite mistakenly sold a piece of music via its item shop. Now, that item has been retired, with Epic offering refunds and apologies to interested players.
The object in question was a piece of music called The Wild. Previously, the item was only available as a level 70 reward for players with the Chapter 2 Season 6 Battle Pass.
What is the problem with this article? Fortnite has never sold a Battle Pass reward as a separate purchase in the item shop. In fact, Epic had previously promised never to sell such an item because doing so would be unfair to players who actually earned the item through the game.
While the track was quickly removed following player complaints, it’s clear adding that track to the store wasn’t just a simple mistake. The developer actually advertised the sale of the item through multiple social media posts (now deleted), complete with samples of animated tracks.
So what happened here? Some players have speculated that this track was originally planned as an item shop item before being added as a battle pass reward. However, the social media posts may have been scheduled in advance before that decision was made.
This is just speculation on the part of the players, though. And Epic hasn’t commented on how the mistake happened. However, they have pledged to refund the money to all players who purchased the track while it was on sale.
