History

The game begins with the revival of the Authority invading the city of Vineland. During this slaughter, you choose to play as a male or female Walker. After witnessing the destruction of your hometown, take up arms as a Ranger and set out to avenge your fallen comrades.

However, the silly tone of the game prevents all major emotional beats from landing during these traumatic opening moments. That’s not necessarily a complaint, as I’ve found the writing available to be captivating for much of the experience. The writing is often so ironic that I feared I had to go to the dentist. The humor of the game is anything but sophisticated or nuanced, but the madness that pervades the characters and the world has made me smile on more than one occasion.

The true story of Rage 2 involves Walker interacting with allies who can complete the mythical Project Dagger. Along the way, he meets a colorful cast of characters and completes some memorable missions.

For example, I had a lot of fun attending a murder TV show so that I could win the favor of a selfish TV executive. Likewise, the mad scientist, Dr. Anton Kvasir, offers some delightfully twisted lines on human anatomy. All of this is accentuated by excellent vocal acting all around. The deliveries range from Walker’s sarcasm to an NPC’s rampant babble, and all of them consistently fit into this crazy world.
