Presentation

Keeping the theme of simplicity, the images in Baba Is You are incredibly simple. Your character sprite has no real identity and the world looks bare. The look is reminiscent of an old 8-bit title but doesn’t quite have the charm of those games. Obviously, keeping the basic things was necessary to allow you to understand the rules and their effects.
But this can also work against it at times. Low-resolution sprites mean it can be difficult to distinguish between various objects. As the levels get more complex, this becomes more of an issue, with the sheer amount of blocks and objects in play. Better visual quality could have made a difference in this regard.
The soundtrack takes a similar approach. Based on retro classics, it’s totally bland. Each of the few songs available is a very simple affair and you don’t really want to hear them. Rather than sticking with repetitive and unimaginative music, it’s best to turn it off and play your playlists.
Final verdict
Baba Is You is undoubtedly an addicting and unique game. While the experience can get frustrating at times, the original nature of the puzzles will have you coming back over and over again. The game has its fair share of problems, especially with regards to the difficulty curve and presentation. Still, it’s easy enough to stop and come back later when you’ve forgotten about the maddening level you were stuck in.
