The symptom of Bioware’s story
I have already written about Bioware and their history. What a story? Well, the only story they keep telling.
In Baldur’s Gate, you play as an orphan with a mysterious past, which you will learn more about as you play. Sound familiar to you? The idea of ”a mysterious outsider learns about his own life” is what drives other Bioware games like KOTOR, Mass Effect, and Planescape: Torment.
To be honest, it’s a compelling story and the narrative of this game is very engaging. But if you’ve played one of those other games before, some parts will feel a little familiar to you.
High and low graphs
Whenever it’s an old game, a question lurks like an elephant in the room. Does it still look good?
Baldur’s Gate holds up quite well. The Enhanced Edition goes a long way in making it look good on modern screens, including adding a widescreen mode and tweaking some graphics. And even if you’re rocking the original game, there are a number of mods to help make the game brilliant. The background graphics of each stage are nice and crisp and have held up well over the years.
That said, there’s only so much you can do with old game graphics. Sprites often look small and limited, and the game’s color palette on the Enhanced Edition looks slightly washed out. Overall, these are minor concerns, and the game looks notable for its age.
