Management

As in the previous game, The Banner Saga 2 divides its narrative into multiple groups. When not engaging in turn-based tactical combat, players spend most of their time trying to keep their caravan satisfied and fed. While traveling, you need to make tough choices. For example, you have to decide whether to help a group of latecomers. However, when you take responsibility for these wayward people, you will likely stretch your limited supplies beyond their limit. There is also a risk that these newcomers are wolves in sheep’s clothing.

Depending on the leader’s decisions, the morale of the caravan fluctuates and very few options translate into an increase in confidence. Typically, rest in the fields is the only way to enforce positive change, but this results in wasted supplies while no progress is being made. Basically, expectations differ from character to character. The Ravens of Bolverk require their leader to be fierce, aggressive, and unwavering. Conversely, Rook / Alette has to take a more diplomatic stance while being willing to make some truly heartbreaking decisions. Frankly, mistakes will happen.

The campaign takes 10 hours to complete, although this can vary depending on a person’s willingness to engage in training. Unfortunately, the story is less hilarious than the previous chapter. The journey lacks thrust for the first few hours, as the game doesn’t introduce a central antagonist until halfway through the narrative. That said, the characters themselves are quite engaging and the second half builds up a significant amount of steam. It’s hard not to worry about these humans and Varl, especially since the minor characters are all actually expendable. With the exception of the main players, all others remain dead if they fall in battle. There is no manual save option, so actions have consequences.
