Battletoads’ challenging mobs

As beautiful and refined as it is, there is nothing super original about the gameplay. This is a side scrolling beat’em like you’ve played hundreds of times already. How, then, can Battletoads (2020) make this experience unique?

It all comes down to the different mix of mobs and environmental backgrounds. Battles often have a perfect blend of long and short range enemies and occasional enemies that can do things like shake the water around you.

It sounds simple, but it turns every fight into a race to focus your priorities. Do you want to eliminate the enemy who shoots to the left? Okay, but you still have to dodge the enemy shooting to the right and melee enemies approaching.

Fortunately, Battletoads (2020) gives you enough different attacks, including the ability to stun enemies with chewing gum. By mastering these techniques, you can overcome even the most difficult mobs.

Battletoads multiplayer fun

Unsurprisingly, Battletoads (2020) has multiplayer. What is surprising, however, are all the creative ways it integrates multiplayer.

For example, the beat’em parts of the game make things simple. You and the other players keep hitting things and heading right until you reach the next challenge.

Sometimes, however, there will be puzzles to unlock a door. In multiplayer, each player has to overcome their own piece of the puzzle.

Other times, you’ll fly a spaceship against hordes of enemies in a fun mix of Galaga and Geometry Wars. In multiplayer, one person flies the ship and the other fires. It’s a rewarding experience … as long as you don’t kill the other player out of frustration!
