So … many … mini-games

If I have a complaint about Battletoads (2020), it is the quantity and duration of the various minigames. At first, they provide a nice break from hacking and cutting through levels. Eventually, I was basically begging the game to blow me some of these games and get back to the fighting action.
Small games, like hacking doors, are fun and refreshing. But things like spaceship sequences can be downright frustrating. And, whether you love it or hate it, you will do spacecraft combat multiple times.
The part that almost broke my brain was a series of mini-games where you apparently repair the damaged spaceship. This involves playing a series of different minigames while a brutal timer clicks all the way to zero. And unless you manage to beat everything in time, you end up restarting the whole thing.
This game has a bad learning curve. And what happened when I “fixed” the ship? It crashed anyway, which was just salt in a pretty bad wound.
Battletoads (2020): final verdict

Minigames aside, are the new Battletoads worth your time? Absolutely. Or, as the game might say, “toadally!”
The animation is crisp, the level design is lively, and the action is fierce. The game is tough but fair and delivers plenty of high-concept action pieces in its short runtime.
Over a quarter of a century ago, Battletoads unsuccessfully attempted to launch a multimedia franchise. Now, with a game that looks and plays so well, they could be successful.
