Cuphead Review

Surprisingly deep

Cuphead is a game of player choices. You can purchase upgrades for things that sound really great, like bullets that automatically track your enemy like heat-seeking missiles. However, these hits deal less damage than normal explosions, and prolonging things like boss fights for too long makes your character more likely to be killed.

Eventually you are encouraged to change your gear for different encounters. This is a powerful incentive to keep playing, as a boss who once pissed you off might be easy enough with slightly different weapons and accessories.

This level of customization is also great because it allows each player to find the style they prefer. Considering that a large part of the appeal of the game is the 2-player mode, it’s nice to know that every player can find a style they love.

The pros and cons of the old school

If you can’t already tell, I really like Cuphead. However, it is true that this game is not for everyone.

The style of the game is absolutely stunning and the gameplay is surprisingly rich and complex. However, the difficulty may be an issue for some players.

Despite looking like a cute cartoon, Cuphead boasts a difficulty level that would be most at home in a Dark Souls game. You may end up throwing your controller in frustration. The good news is you’ll go get it right away because it’s hard to stay away from this game.
