Game

The plot exclusion makes sense when you consider that Dauntless appears to have been designed in the mold of an MMO. The tiny breadcrumbs of the story details serve only as a justification for repeated forays into the wilderness, to fight ever more dangerous beasts, and to improve one’s fighting prowess.

By itself it’s not a bad design choice – video games have a legendary history of de-emphasizing narrative in favor of action. But it means Dauntless he has more to lose if his gaming systems falter.

These systems are mainly focused on cooperative play. Behemoth hunting can be done alone, but the increasing difficulty of battles with these beasts quickly illustrates how important teamwork is here.

Alone or paired with up to three other players, you’ll be dropped off on one of several maps to search for and defeat your favorite Behemoth (or a random Behemoth, depending on the type of fighter you select).

Fight

Combat in Dauntless is fairly nuanced, if burdened with a bit of a learning curve. Players choose a piece of equipment before the hunt, swapping between the various weapons and pieces of equipment they own.

Similar to its spiritual predecessor, Dauntless features different types of elements – Fire, Ice, Electric, and so on – that give their items special bonuses and attributes. Of great importance is paying attention to how one element reacts when it collides with another.

For example, a firearm does a quick job of ice-wielding beasts, but loses some power against the Behemoths of a fiery persuasion. Keeping track of which tools work best against which beast can sometimes be overwhelming, to say the least.
