Presentation

When it comes to presentation, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit is something of a mixed bag. Some parts of the remaster look great and you can really see the improved textures. But others don’t shine that bright and feel like a let down. Menus are a great example that the developer has apparently not committed to. The UI and menu screens all look very similar to what players got in 2010. In fact, some users may be wondering if these items have received any updates at all. Movies are just another example of where images look very dated. This is exacerbated by the fact that so many other parts of the game look so good.

Without a doubt, the best part of the updated graphics are the cars themselves. In terms of quality they do not match those of the Forza or Dirt series. However, they still look great and represent a significant improvement over what players achieved in the original game. However, gamers shouldn’t expect a groundbreaking visual improvement in this particular remaster. This is especially true when it comes to a larger setting, with Seacrest County not exactly rendered with a lot of quality. The textures all look pretty simple when you look past the vehicles themselves.

It’s not all doom and gloom when it comes to presentation. There are relatively few glitches, and the frame rate doesn’t seem to drop much. However, it might be something to do with the fact that it’s locked at just 30 FPS. Meanwhile, the sounds appear to have been remixed, with the machines sounding more realistic than ever. Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered also includes a number of tracks from the original. This includes the opening song “Edge of the Earth,” which instantly takes you back to the classic game.

Final verdict

Those with fond memories of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit will definitely want to try the remaster. It captures everything that was great about the original and updates it for modern hardware. While the graphics haven’t been overhauled as much as you might want, they still look decent.

However, those who missed the first game may find it more difficult to get into the remastered version now. It can feel a little dated at times, and the lack of a proper story might put some people off. But the gameplay is still fun and worth a look at least.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered is now available on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch.
