Die by the meter

Why is it so difficult to survive in this game? It all comes down to a variety of health meters.
Basically, you need to keep an eye on the meters that measure your hunger, thirst, and overall health. Additional meters measure your fatigue (you need to sleep, but this advances the doomsday clock) and immunity (which helps you ward off disease and pestilence).
Probably the biggest problem in the game is the lack of food. Whether you are plundering, trading or even killing for food, there is never enough food to keep your hunger level high. If you stay hungry, your health deteriorates. And even when you find food, you only need a night’s sleep to wake up hungry again.
Is it realistic? Of course, food would be one of the first things to miss in a city on the brink of apocalypse. But it makes the gaming experience absolutely frustrating.
Choose your misadventure
On paper, one of the best things about Pathologic 2 is the ability to choose your own adventure. For example, you can try to find out what happened to your father just before you arrived in this spooky city. Or maybe try to find out what’s inside some of the eerie Gothic architecture you are surrounded by.
However, this is one of the many areas where the game shoots itself in the foot. You have to put together these interesting stories by yourself with the little help of the game. And the brutal survival design means you are likely to die (and continue to die) long before you solve any of these narratives.
