Gato Roboto Review | Gammick
Outside of the mech you are vulnerable

Exploration

Obviously, Gato Roboto needs to have some exploration. It wouldn’t be a Metroidvania game if it wasn’t. From this point of view, however, the game is like a scaled-down version of the genre. There is no need to go back to the areas multiple times and only a few collectibles are included. The developers focused on the player pushing forward rather than looking back.

There are positives and negatives to this approach. The scarcity of content means you can whiz through the game in a couple of hours. After you finish it, you’ll likely be left craving for a lot more. However, I’d say this is a better approach than forcing yourself to constantly retrace your steps.

Many Metroidvania titles fall into the trap of including huge amounts of backtracking. But that just means you’re constantly rebuilding old paths, stuck in the same environments over and over again. Gato Roboto’s approach still allows for some exploration and at the same time prevents the game from becoming obsolete.
