Magic, on the other hand, is clearly where much of the work has gone. Although there are only about 11 spells, each of them looks completely unique and organically fits into combat. Whether you intend to specialize in magic or use it to improve your mundane skills, Fable has the spells for you.
But Magic in Fable is almost there also powerful. Here’s a pro tip: Take the spell called Enflame and level it up two or three times. Congratulations, you have won the game!
Enflame deals significant damage in a circle around the player, knocking enemies to the ground. And – you are immune to all attacks during casting. This is an extreme example, but any spell with a stun or knock down effect will make most enemies totally defenseless. This makes the second half of the game much easier than I thought it was.
The combat remains fun throughout the game, but the tension peaks in the middle of the game and never returns to that point again. The closest it gets is the final boss, which plays out a little differently than most combat encounters up to that point.
Final verdict
Fable is a fascinating game with some truly unique design choices. Not all of them work, however, and there are legitimate issues with game balance.
But the world of Fable has no shortage of personality. While the game is far from flawless, it’s a really fun action RPG and absolutely worth the 20 or 30 hours it takes to beat.
