Just like the original Shenmue games, the 2019 edition combines many genres. Series director Yu Suzuki has often stated that he intends the titles to be life simulators. To this end, players find themselves having to perform all kinds of tasks. Ryo needs a steady supply of cash for almost everything. Some main missions also involve spending large sums of money to purchase an essential item. Gain income in Shenmue III the same way as in real life: by completing jobs.
A brief taste of the types of work available to Ryo include fishing, cutting wood or gathering herbs. They might seem like boring inclusions to fill game time, but they’re essential to the experience. Everything in Shenmue III is all about improving yourself, and these minigames provide the means to do so. The variety of tasks keeps things fresh, while the ways you can spend your hard-earned wages are plentiful. Unlocking new combat moves and upgrading your skills also involve completing minigames.
Outside of that, you spend most of your time fighting bad guys and doing detective work. Police work is about questioning people and choosing the best answers in conversations to get information. There are also several clues to find that will help you advance the case. Meanwhile, the combat takes place as one of the first Virtua Fighter games. A few updates to the system mean that fighting a lot of enemies is less frustrating. But it remains generally unsatisfactory.
