Presentation

Much of the game’s presentation appears to be stuck in the past. The animations are far from smooth and remind you of the early days of 3D games. Characters often go about their business in what can only be described as a clumsy way. This gives many of the individuals within Shenmue III a lifeless sort of character. This is especially true when it comes to facial animations.

Even worse, though, is the sluggish performance. While the characters can’t show a lot of emotion on their faces, the voice acting is unbearable at times. Choosing any good deliveries is difficult. The dialogue sounds as if the actors idly read it from a script after seeing it for the first time. Ultimately, Shenmue III appears to have made no progress over the next several years. It is technologically stuck in the past. While this is nice in terms of gameplay and story, it’s a real detriment to the presentation.

Final verdict

Shenmue III would always be in a difficult position. Many of the game mechanics and concepts introduced by Shenmue nearly 20 years ago are now commonplace. While the original titles were groundbreaking, this sequel does very little that you can’t find in other games. Classic gameplay and minigames are likely to appeal only to longtime fans. Newcomers will likely find the quirky design choices the series is known for baffling. While it’s definitely the sequel fans wanted, Shenmue III will remain an acquired taste.
