They Are Billions is a post-apocalyptic real-time strategy game. It was released in Early Access via Steam in 2017. The game then went into full release in June 2019 before hitting consoles in July.

While there isn’t much narrative in the title, it does feature a tempting setting. The action takes place over 100 years in the future. A fast-moving infection has led to the collapse of human civilization, with a significant setback in technology.

The only survivors now live in colonies set up as fortresses to keep zombies at bay. Take on the role of leader of a new colony that is seeking to restore humanity to its former glory.

Game

They Are Billions starts out as a pretty standard RTS game. Build resource gathering units to collect wood and other materials. Then the military units arrive to fight the impending zombie horde. Think Age of Empires, where you have to build your own settlement and collect every resource you can get your hands on.

However, things take a turn after the first few days. This is because They Are Billions stands out from other RTS games by being all about defense. Here the only option against the billions of zombies is to stand up and pray that your defenses don’t fail.

The ultimate goal is to make sure the undead never enter your settlement. Once they break through the defensive perimeter, you’re toasted. Whatever this zombie infection is, it spreads at a lightning-fast rate. A single enemy can lead the entire village to perish in moments.

If you can keep the zombies out, you have the option to build more elaborate buildings and elect officers. These can provide extra bonuses that will help. Although you shouldn’t expect too much in the way of free stuff in They Are Billions.

Since the horde can arrive at any time from any direction, you have to keep an eye on everything constantly. The fact that you don’t know when you will face the next attack creates a lot of tension during each match.

In truth, you feel perpetually nervous while playing They Are Billions. Fortunately, the game forces you to start with an easy difficulty setting. Once this is complete, you can move on to the more challenging scenarios. It is in these more difficult rounds that you really need to explore your surroundings and start developing strategies.
