missions
It’s a shame that Morrowind puts up so many barriers to keep the player from exploring. If you can handle all the grind and learn to handle the exhilarating, slow motion speed, the narrative awaits you. Seriously, what a fiction it is. Morrowind is a huge and beautiful world with interesting questlines and scenarios everywhere you look.
The missions are in no way manual. Although the diary gives you a rough guide on what to do, you are free to ignore it. Take missions from the Thieves’ Guild for example. I really liked these. On the surface, they look like simple recovery missions. “I need a diamond” or “This legendary helmet should be mine”.
However, how you choose to get these items is up to you. The diary told me to get the diamond from the hidden chest upstairs. He needed a lockpick, though, and I couldn’t worry about it. Instead, I spent five minutes trying to get the AI to turn around by talking to her, quickly rescuing and running to steal a nearby diamond. It was fun to find non-compliant methods to tick off my mission list.

Lore
Tradition-wise, Morrowind might be a little too much for some, but I loved it. Almost every NPC in the game has unique pieces of lore to tell you about. Tradition is not limited to direct goals either. Bethesda has hidden many interesting archives.
For example, take the Tel Vos dungeon which contains several journal entries detailing the misery of the miners. Putting these voices together tells a story of arrogance that turns into fear. More importantly, it adds that little extra level of detail to the world of Morrowind. You will discover a lot of this in the game and most of it is really fascinating.
