Fun game

The drawing system is also used for more than just combat. Sometimes you will have to crack a lock with a giant sword. Other times you will need to turn a crank on a giant gacha machine using a massive hand. These little moments aren’t exactly puzzles, but they’re pretty fun. Seeing how the Marvels use their unique abilities to alter the environment or remove obstacles is always quite fun. The feeling these little moments provide is rather reminiscent of building stuff in Lego games, which is why it might work so well.

In addition to those light moments, there are also tons of other gameplay segments besides the standard fighting elements. Players will do things like garrison turrets, drive planes with large buttons, and rescue citizens in various ways. All of these elements make The Wonderful 101: Remastered interesting, as you will never know exactly which level will launch you from moment to moment.

A not-so-wonderful remaster

As awesome as this game is, it’s not that different from the Wii U version. It looks a little prettier in the graphics area, but not by much for a 2013 game. Plus, there’s some extra content included. However, everything else is basically the same, for better or for worse. This is a real shame, as it would have been a perfect opportunity to fine-tune a few things that detract from the original.

For example, the early stages of the game are a bit of a challenge. The game has a surprisingly steep learning curve, made worse by some vague tutorials. Of course, once you’ve actually gotten a good grasp of the game mechanics, it’s a terrific experience. Unfortunately, it’s not hard to imagine that opening moments could take many people away from such a fun game.

To accompany this huge problem, there are also many smaller problems that could have been improved. Camera problems can be frustratingly common, as can some times when depth perception problems can ruin you. This is a game where the action can get frantic very quickly. In those days, the camera needs to be much more functional, but hopefully they can eventually be fixed.

Final verdict

The Wonderful 101: Remastered is a perfect opportunity for new players to experience this underrated title. It doesn’t go as far as a remaster could be, but it delivers the experience that made the original so warm and fun. The gameplay is fun and satisfying, despite some glitches left by Wii U. All in all, The Wonderful 101: Remastered is a great game for fans of PlatinumGames’ character, superhero, or action games.
