Pilot suit

The campaign also features segments focusing on the maneuverability of the Pilot suit, which can double jump and run on walls. As the story progresses, you will find yourself having to traverse increasingly complex environments. These not only interrupt the fight, but also get you used to the kind of speed and accuracy you need to be competitive in multiplayer. When a single player campaign can “train you” in ways that will be useful outside of the prescribed mode, it’s always a useful tidbit when it comes to shooters.

Multiplayer

The multiplayer in Titanfall 2 has also been significantly revamped. While the gameplay itself is similar to the original Titanfall, the level progression is much deeper and more rewarding. It is now much more like Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Each rank increase grants access to new weapons, and using a certain weapon unlocks upgrades for that specific weapon.

I haven’t noticed a major weapon balance issue, which is unusual. Typically, in the early days of FPS multiplayer, there was a slightly better gun or edge than everyone else. So you ended up getting entire matches of players using exactly the same loadout. This is not the case with Titanfall 2.

The combat between the Titan and the Pilot also feels suitably scaled down, leaving these relics of the game’s design in the past where they belong. There is also strength in numbers. A Titan is better than a single Pilot while in the wild. But multiple pilots working together and using their superior maneuverability can easily take down a Titan.

Final verdict

For anyone disappointed that the original Titanfall didn’t live up to its potential, Titanfall 2 makes up for its shortcomings in every way. The nuanced relationship between Pilot and Titan gives Titanfall 2 a unique narrative and atmosphere of its own. This may just be the beginning of a new challenger to the throne of the Call of Duty and Battlefield franchises.

With incredibly responsive and fast-paced gameplay, coupled with Respawn Entertainment’s commitment to offering free DLC for its entire duration in lieu of the now standard season pass system, Titanfall 2 is the smash hit the original was meant to be.
