Multiplayer

While there are limited single player options, TrackMania has always been a first multiplayer driver. Online lobbies can support up to 200 people at the same time. Of course, don’t physically compete together at the same time. No hitboxes are detected among players, but you can see everyone else’s ghosts as you try to set the best possible time. These lobbies are as competitive as the games can get. The rush I feel when trying to get past these colossal lobbies is similar to what battle royale games offer. But it looks more focused here, as you can directly see all of your competition and how they are performing.

I’ve spent some of my best hours of video games self-improving lap after lap on Forza Motorsport 5. Maybe that’s why TrackMania 2: Canyon feels so natural to switch between other racing games. The desire to reduce lap times syncs well with TrackMania’s basic design. In the past, I would often complete more than 100 laps in one session to have the perfect race line and braking zones cemented in my mind. It turns out that things haven’t changed much after all these years.
