Mechanics

Many of the mission mechanics are the same as in XCOM: Enemy Unknown. But there are some radical changes that give XCOM 2 an edge over its predecessor.

The first is the customization available on each of your troops. It’s nice to be able to alter so many details of every single member of your team. It really helps you to feel that these are people you are in charge of caring for. It can also help you when you visually look at your map.

For example, you may decide to give all of your rangers black hair and all of your psychic agents green hair. You can deepen your gaming experience by hiding your sharp shooters with full camouflage gear, including face and headgear. Your options are almost literally endless.

Actions

As you move around the field, the blue marked areas designate spaces where you can move and still maintain a second action. Conversely, the areas outlined in yellow perform both of your actions. You can move farther, but you won’t be able to attack or use a specialization that round.

After every member of your squad has moved, all the aliens on the map also have the opportunity to move. If you’ve found out where they are, you can see how they move. Otherwise it’s just a mysterious sound effect that occurs in a foggy area until it’s your turn again.

Your goals are displayed in the upper left corner and some are time-dependent. You have a certain number of turns before you lose the round, even if you have defeated all enemies on the map.
