Microsoft has revealed that it will create and found a new subsidiary called Vault in Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax Media if the group’s acquisition goes ahead.

The details of Vault come from documents submitted to the European Commission, a body that is investigating whether Microsoft’s purchase of ZeniMax violates antitrust laws. The name “Vault” appears to be a nod to the Fallout RPG series created by Bethesda, which features nuclear shelters known as vaults.

Some stores have mistakenly assumed that the creation of Vault means that the ZeniMax name will no longer be used and all of the company’s assets and studies will be transferred to the newly established Vault.

However, a document submitted to the European Commission explains that Vault will be merged “with and into ZeniMax” and, “As a result of this merger, Vault will cease to exist and ZeniMax will survive, as a wholly owned subsidiary of Microsoft.”

The transitory nature of Vault is further underlined by the full name of the subsidiary: Vault Merger Sub, Inc.

The European Commission is expected to make a decision on the acquisition of ZeniMax by March 5th. He may order concessions from Microsoft to allow the purchase or order a full investigation if he has material concerns.

Microsoft announced it struck a deal with ZeniMax last year for a record $ 7.5 billion in cash and stock. The holding currently owns Arkane Studios, Bethesda Softworks, id Software, MachineGames and Tango Gameworks.
