Google’s beta testing of the next iteration of its mobile operating system is underway and on schedule. The company released Android 14 Beta 3 today, and that marks what Google calls “platform stability.” This means that the developer APIs and all app-related behavior in the OS are now final and will not change until mass market release.

This is where third-party app developers will want to work hard to integrate the new features into their apps.

With this release, Android supports font scaling up to 200% by default to provide visually impaired users with more accessibility options. Additionally, users can grant partial access to their media library when an app requests one of the visual media permissions introduced in Android 13. There are also updates to key OpenJDK libraries and security changes related to app intents.

If you’re already enrolled in the Android Beta program, you’ll receive Beta 3 as an over-the-air update. If not, you can register here with an eligible device. By the way, this is the first version of Android 14 that the new Pixel 7a has access to.

After that, the latest beta will follow in July, and then the final release at some point: Google hasn’t committed to a specific launch month so far, but if we follow what happened last year, August seems likely.
