Preliminary values for global smartphone shipments for the July-September period are in and Channels reports a decrease of 9% compared to last year. A combination of declining consumer spending and economic uncertainty led the smartphone market to its worst quarterly result since the third quarter of 2014.

Samsung maintained its leading position with a 22% market share thanks to large promotions on stock phones that helped reduce accumulated inventory. Apple came in second with a market share of 18% and the only one of the top five vendors to record positive annual growth. Xiaomi came in third place with a share of 14% followed by Oppo with 10% and vivo with 9% respectively.

Looking ahead, Canalys analysts expect small signs of improvement in smartphone demand heading into the fourth quarter of 2022 and the first half of 2023. Suppliers will need to adjust production forecasts with their supply chain partners .
