Google launched a Maps feature for Android and iOS last year, showing the greenest route. It has been available in the US and Canada for nearly 18 months, while Germany joined the party in August.

Now the mode is expanding to “nearly 40” European countries, including France, Ireland, Poland, Spain and the UK, but Google hasn’t provided the full list of regions.

The ecological route mode offers the most efficient route, even if it means taking longer to get there. It will count hills, traffic, tolls and other stops, provide the one where the speed is most constant, and calculate the fuel saved.

Google Maps will also allow you to select the type of car you drive, be it petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric. Also, if you are a fan of the latter, you can always visit and bookmark our new ArenaEV.com project where we talk about all electric vehicles.

The system is based on feedback from the EEA (European Environment Agency) and combined with Google’s machine learning models of the most popular engines in certain regions. This means that some fossil-fueled vehicles could be hijacked through highways while electric cars could receive road tips even on the surface for better energy recovery.

The feature will be launched in Europe just in time for this winter’s impending energy crisis. Many countries of the Old Continent expect heating to become much more expensive, which means that any cost-saving and cost-cutting measure, like this one from Google Maps, is incredibly welcome.
