Introduction, specifications, unboxing

The Huawei nova 10 series premiered in July, but their launch in Europe took place a couple of months later, in a season full of Apple and Xiaomi phones. Yet, just by looking at this Huawei nova 10 Pro that we have here today, we can definitely feel a breath of fresh air, a step out of the established regularity.

Huawei’s phone business has been losing access to Google services and 5G hardware for quite some time now. But that didn’t stop Huawei from reinventing itself, and its Android-powered HarmonyOS helped a lot.

The nova series usually caters to younger users with its fresh design, powerful hardware, and selfie-focused imaging kits in addition to high-quality rear cameras. And the new Huawei nova 10 Pro offers everything we’ve mentioned and even more surprises like a 1200p AMOLED and 100W fast charging.

Indeed, the incredibly slim body of the Huawei nova 10 Pro will speak to many users right after the first glance. It has a unique design with an even more extravagant camera island on the back. These, along with the nova logo, make the nova 10 Pro a standout among other Android phones.

The 6.78-inch OLED offers higher resolution than typical Full HD and offers 10-bit color depth, 120Hz refresh rate, and HDR10 support. The pill-shaped notch around the top left corner houses the nova 10 Pro’s showstopper: the dual-selfie camera with a 60MP ultra-wide angle and an 8MP telephoto lens, both with AF. How about that ?!

The rear camera island is more traditional but still manages to offer some premium touches here and there. There’s a 50MP primary sensor with a RYYB color filter, followed by an 8MP AF camera that takes both ultra-wide-angle and macro photos. The third and final eye on the back is a 2MP depth sensor.

Another big surprise is the 100W fast charging for the 4500mAh battery and the aforementioned charger is obviously bundled with the phone. According to Huawei’s specifications, it should charge between 20% and 80% in just 10 minutes.

The usual necessities such as stereo speakers, NFC and an under-display fingerprint sensor are also present.

There are three obvious omissions on the Huawei nova 10 Pro, with the first two valid for any recent Huawei smartphone – we’ll miss Google’s apps and services, plus 5G connectivity. We were also hoping to see at least an IP67 rating for dust and water protection, but Huawei didn’t mention any ingress protection details.

Now that we’ve cleared what appears to be missing from a quick spec scroll, let’s go ahead and open the nova 10 Pro’s box and see what’s inside.

Unboxing the Huawei nova 10 Pro

The Huawei nova 10 Pro comes in a tall white box, which contains the phone itself, the 100W power brick, and a 6A USB-AC cable.

Inside the box you will also find a transparent soft case, which will reduce the protrusion of the rear camera, but will also take away the slim profile that we liked so much.

Finally, you also get a thin protective film already applied to the screen. It’s a bit of a burr magnet and we peeled it off for testing purposes, but we enjoyed having it.
