A new feature could be coming to Instagram that allows users to repost others’ posts or reels. It was noticed by social media analyst Matt Navarra, who posted a screenshot on Twitter. It showed a mew profile card called “Repost”. Instagram later confirmed it was testing the feature in a statement a TechCrunch.
We are exploring the possibility of resharing posts in the feed, similar to how you can reshare them in Stores, so that people can share what resonates with them and so the original creators are credited for their work.[…] We plan to test it with a small number of people soon.
Currently, the most common way people can repost or share posts is by adding them to a story that expires in 24 hours. This new “Repost” feature would work by sending a reel or reposted post to a user’s main followers feed instead of Stories. Both Twitter and TikTok each have their own similar functionality.

The published screenshots reveal that the repost feature is for “recommending a post your friends might like by reposting it to a feed or story”. The Repost feature will be in the share menu of a post or reel and followers will be able to reply to the reposted content with a message to the reposter. Meanwhile, the repost tab will be shown in a user’s profile, which followers can see. Users may also be able to add thoughts to a repost before sharing it.
In recent times, Instagram has taken a big step forward with Reels and video content, and not long before, it was pushing shop functionality, overshadowing the social app’s original vision of a photo-sharing place in the attempt to compete with the intense popularity of the TikTok short video platform.
