Today the US Supreme Court upheld the law that will ban TikTok in the US unless it is sold by January 19th. With the deadline fast approaching and no deal in sight, the app has promised to shut down completely on Sunday in the US, even though the law doesn’t actually force it to do so (it only requires Google and Apple to remove TikTok from their app stores).
TikTok’s competitors are obviously very happy about the app’s possible demise in the US, and so today Instagram announced two new features for Reels, its TikTok clone.

You can now discover reels your friends like or add notes to in the top right corner of the Reels tab. And you’ll also see a reply bar, to make it easier to “start conversations about content you like,” Instagram says. This will give you “even more opportunities for your reels to be seen by people who don’t yet follow you.”
You can see how it works in the screenshots above. On each reel, the top right will show who among your friends has interacted with that particular reel. And you can then respond to their activity, so if a friend likes a reel, you can respond with a like.
It is not at all surprising that these features were rolled out first in the United States and will come to other places in the future as well.
