iOS 17 is coming later this year alongside new iPhones, and a new report from Bloomberg’s generally very reliable Mark Gurman sheds some light on what we can expect from the next version of Apple’s operating system, aside from performance improvements a all round.

Perhaps the most intriguing new feature will be the ability to use your locked iPhone running iOS 17 practically like a smart display. It will show calendar appointments, weather information and notifications in a new style that resembles a freestanding smart display.

This view will presumably only appear when the iPhone is in landscape orientation. The obvious idea behind this is to make phones more useful when they’re on your desk or nightstand. There will be a dark background with bright text for easy readability when this feature is turned on.

Apple is also said to be working on a new horizontal interface for iPad, but it’s unclear when that might arrive, as the company has been slow to bring new iPhone features to its tablets lately. Speaking of tablets, Apple is apparently still developing a low-cost tablet that can attach magnetically to walls and stands, although this is said to be a very slow-moving affair.

The Wallet app will get some “significant changes” in iOS 17, and there will also be improvements to location services, as well as a new journaling app designed to “add notes and a stronger social element to the device.” Expect new features to record your mood and also cope with poor eyesight, as well as the Health app making the leap to iPadOS.

Finally, AirPlay could appear much more in hotels and “other places that offer TVs and speakers,” and the feature itself will be updated (although it’s unclear how) in the next release of Apple’s mobile software, alongside SharePlay. .

Apple is expected to showcase iOS 17 at the World Developer Conference on June 5th.
