Kyocera today announced it will officially exit the consumer mobile phone business, following a difficult period in which the company racked up a loss of 2.27 billion yen ($16.6 million) in February. In other news, it appears that Kyocera was still making phones, though you, like us, may not have heard of them in recent months (or years).

The company is just leaving the consumer space, by the way. It will continue to serve corporate customers. With the deterioration of profitability, something had to be done and, apparently, it was necessary to cut consumer products. “We can no longer find marketability for the general market,” said Kyocera president Hideo Tanimoto.

The company has had a tough time competing recently, even in the Japanese market, with Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi and Oppo, as well as other Japanese brands like Sharp and Sony.

This is sad news for those who have been dealing with cell phones for some time, as Kyocera was one of the oldest companies involved in the industry, manufacturing cell phones since 1989.
