Late last year, Apple announced its self-service repair program that would allow customers access to detailed repair parts, tools, and manuals for Apple products. In April, the program launched in the US with repair parts and manuals for iPhone 12, iPhone 13 and iPhone SE 2022. Apple just updated its self-service repair program with parts and repair manuals for all models MacBook M1, including the 13-inch MacBook Air and the 13, 14, and 16-inch MacBook Pro models.

The repair manuals are quite lengthy and show you how to fix things from the keyboard keys, the display, perform a battery replacement, change the trackpad, and how to replace individual module cards like the MagSafe, Touch ID and USB-C components that they could wear out or fail over time.

Parts for various repairs are listed and ready to buy, and tools for the jobs can also be found. The manual indicates which parts and tools may be required for repair. Some parts such as the keyboard caps are disposable, which means that if you remove a keyboard cover from the keyboard, it can no longer be used and must be replaced with a new one. The key caps are only available in a complete set.

Whether you need to purchase parts and perform your own repair rather than letting Apple repair it will depend on your repair itself and how confident you are in your repair skill levels. For more common repairs like the display, however, you won’t save much if you don’t already have a full set of tools.

The self-service repair program is a great option to consider for people with a damaged iPhone or Mac, but it’s not for the faint of heart. You assume the risk of the repair yourself and are ready for any other accidental damage incurred during the repair attempt. You should also contact Apple after doing some repairs as these parts may be serialized on the logic board. Still, it’s nice to see the option and see the actual repair manuals for a MacBook, so while it’s not a groundbreaking move, it’s a step in the right direction.
