nubia has unveiled an “S” revision of its nubia Z40 Pro. The phone upgrades to the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset (from the original 8) and offers an improved battery and charging system. There is also a special edition with a sci-fi look, but let’s start from the beginning.
The nubia Z40S Pro is powered by the 8+ Gen 1 chip, paired with LPDDR5 RAM (8, 12, or even 18GB) and UFS 3.1 (128, 256, 512GB or a top-of-the-line 1TB option). The chip is kept cool by a larger vapor chamber than the non-S phone was supposed to work with (which also had the hottest chipset), as well as a graphene sheet and thermal paste with synthetic diamonds (which have a conductivity really high temperature).

Next, the battery. The base model still features a 5,000mAh battery that charges at 80W. However, the alternative version increases charging to 120W. This model uses a smaller 4,600mAh battery and 0-100% full charge. takes 19 minutes.

The rest is similar to the original Z40 Pro. The phone has a 6.67-inch AMOLED display with bezels just under a millimeter thick. This is a 144Hz display with 480Hz touch sample rate, resolution of 1,080 x 2,400 px. The 10-bit panel has 100% DCI-P3 coverage and a peak brightness of 1,000 nits.

For the 5,000mAh version, ZTE has managed to eliminate some of the thickness and the phone now measures 8.05mm, up from 8.4mm. This was done by rearranging the interior rather than cutting out features – stereo speakers with DTS: X Ultra are still on board.
As well as the cameras. Like its predecessors, this model doesn’t care about the broad main camera trend that defines most modern smartphones. Those are good for general photography, but not so good for human subjects.
The nubia Z40S Pro has a 35mm main camera, which also has a dedicated 50mm mode for portraits. It uses the same IMX787 (1 / 1.7 ”) sensor as before behind a brighter f / 1.6 lens with OIS. This camera can record 4K video at 120fps.
There is a large lens on board, the 50MP module has a 116 ° (14mm) lens, which can focus at just 2cm away (less than an inch) and record 8K macro video. Another way to get closer to the subject is to use the 125mm periscope lens with OIS and an 8MP sensor.

Also on the back is a 6-LED flash and a flicker sensor which helps when shooting in artificial lighting conditions. The camera’s people-centered approach is supported by image processing that accurately preserves skin tones.
The phone is available in Magic Green and Night Sea. And then there is the special edition, which takes the style of the Chinese anime “Spirit Cage” and comes with a themed accessory pack. This also includes preloaded content such as ringtones and wallpapers.

Let’s talk about prices. The nubia Z40S Pro starts at CNY 3,400 ($ 500 / € 490 / ₹ 40,000) for the 8 / 128GB base unit with a 5,000mAh battery and 80W charging. There are also 8 / 256GB versions, 12/256 GB and 12/512 GB.

Then there’s the 120W model, which starts at CNY 4,300 for a 12/256 GB drive ($ 635 / € 620 / ₹ 51,000). Alternatively, you can get plenty of memory – 18GB of RAM and 1TB of storage – for CNY 6,700. Finally, there’s the “Spirit Cage” model (120 W, 12/256 GB) for CNY 4,700 ($ 700 / € 680 / ₹ 55,500).

ZTE is also releasing three dubbed GaN chargers with nubia NeoCharge 3.0 technology. The former has two USB-C ports and one USB-A with a peak power of 65W, priced at CNY 148 or CNY 158 if you want the fancier “Transparent Edition”. If you need more power, the third charger can deliver 100W in total, split between three USB-C ports and one USB-A port. This is CNY 259.
