Today, we finally received official confirmation from OnePlus that the OnePlus 11 is IP64-rated for dust and splash resistance in all markets where it is offered.
According to the definitions of the IP code, this means that the phone is “dust-tight”, with complete protection against the ingress of dust particles. It’s also resistant to water splashes from any direction. This one, however, is less water resistant than many of its competitors offer – it’s not uncommon to see phones protected by immersion in the water, and not just splashes. Even at lower prices than the OnePlus 11, if we consider Samsung’s Galaxy A series phones.

If you’re wondering why we’re writing an entire post about this, it’s because there was a lot of confusion yesterday on the subject of IP ratings. US-based media outlets appear to have received the IP rating information ahead of the global launch of the OnePlus 11. However, many other media companies based elsewhere have not, and that includes us.
It’s not at all out of the ordinary that Chinese smartphones don’t have any sort of IP rating, so we didn’t think much of it initially, but then like every outlet that had been sent a OnePlus unit 11 weeks ago posted a review a Once the launch event was over, it became apparent that some were told about the IP64 rating and some weren’t. We immediately reached out to OnePlus for comment and it has taken until today to receive a response.

It wouldn’t have been unheard of for the rating to apply only to models in a specific market, such as the US or North America as a whole. Stuff like that has happened before, and if a particular market is more sensitive to specific characteristics like this than others, it may not make financial sense to IP test all units sold anywhere, even though, in theory, they could all withstand the same amount of powder and water thrown at them.
Sadly, that’s not the case, and if you buy a OnePlus 11, it will be IP64 rated no matter where you get it from. This should add some peace of mind for you, hopefully. If you’re interested in the OnePlus 11, be sure to check out our in-depth review.
