The Xiaomi 12S Ultra arrived with great promise and incredible features, including a 1-inch camera sensor from Sony. This camera-focused flagship was developed with Leica and we did a review of the dedicated camera, which was released yesterday.

In it we explain the advantages this new camera has over its predecessors and competitors and how it delivers arguably the best photos we’ve ever seen on a smartphone, ever. Ultrawide and zoom lenses also work at least as much as last year’s Mi 11 Ultra, but we expected more in video performance.

The 12S Ultra might look like a camera, but it has a lot more to offer: a superb OLED display, stereo speakers, and IP68 rating. It is also the first phone on the market with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, although it doesn’t mean much since Xiaomi won’t sell the device overseas.

In the world of faster and faster charging, Xiaomi has decided to stick with 67W for 12S Ultra. The 4,860mAh battery and its charger didn’t top the charts, but they still proved fast enough for power users; the stereo speakers are doing a great job too.

Sadly, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra is just a showcase device for now. Users outside of China will have a hard time getting it and even more difficult to set up due to Chinese MIUI and pre-installed apps. Also, the default keyboard is in Chinese, Netflix has an SD limit (even if your friend pays for Ultra HD), and the system app menus are also different.

We had a lot of fun reviewing this phone and hopefully we will soon see its unmatched camera on a globally available device.
