Huawei will unveil the Mate 50 series on September 6 with at least four phones planned. There may be a surprise appearance when the Chinese wireless authority released images of a foldable phone that appears to be the successor to the Huawei P50 Pocket (which was unveiled in December last year).

The device, known for now only by model number “BAL-AL80”, is only Huawei’s second clamshell folding, which prefers the larger horizontal folding design. Unfortunately, the images are not accompanied by detailed specifications.

The images show a two-tone design – ostensibly glass and leather – and show a triple camera. The P50 Pocket featured a 40MP, ultra-wide 13MP (120 °) main camera and a special 32MP camera that sees in the UV spectrum.

The only real spec listed is the battery capacity, 4,260mAh, large enough for this form of foldable (and 260mAh larger than the P50 Pocket).

Another Huawei phone has leaked, this one that is much less interesting: the CHA-AL80 appears to be a fairly standard midranger (the side-mounted fingerprint reader betrays it). It has a 3,900mAh battery, according to the regulator.

Both phones run HarmonyOS, of course, as Huawei had to ditch Android. Furthermore, both are 4G phones as the company cannot source 5G components.

Anyway, will the new leaflet appear in a Mate-centric event? It is unclear, but the launch of the P60 series is also difficult to predict. There have been some dubious leaks on the Mate 50 series and some more information from more reliable sources, but nothing on a new flip fold.
