After its first introduction in Korea in July and a subsequent launch for the Chinese market in September, Samsung is now rolling out the maintenance mode globally. This feature, also known as repair mode in Korea, allows you to block access to your personal data on your phone during maintenance.

The launch of maintenance mode begins with “select models” of the Galaxy S21 and S22 series running the newly released One UI 5. The rollout will continue throughout 2023, “with availability expanding to more Galaxy devices,” says Samsung.

If you are lucky enough to have a device with this feature, you will find it in Settings> Battery and device maintenance. Once the maintenance mode is activated and then the device is restarted, all personal information will be inaccessible to the person who repairs the phone. They won’t even be able to recover your installed apps.

The data and accounts they generate while in Maintenance Mode, as well as apps downloaded from the Galaxy Store, will be automatically deleted upon exiting. Speaking of signing out, you do this by tapping the mode quick settings icon and then authenticating using your fingerprint. After that, the phone restarts in normal mode as if nothing ever happened.

This sounds pretty good to us; you just need to make sure your local repair shop doesn’t have a general hardware reset policy for the devices before they come in (and / or before they return to customers).
