Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset has just been unveiled and smartphone makers are already lining up to release a new premium phone with the flagship chip. What is Chip? You can watch the first official promotional video, although it requires some explanation.

The video doesn’t explain it, but it boasts of the triple 18-bit ISP that can handle three 36MP cameras simultaneously. Additionally, the new AI hardware can segment the image into face, hair, background, and so on to improve results in portrait mode.

Next, reflections on water: Qualcomm is the latest smartphone chipset maker to adopt hardware-accelerated ray tracing. It’s the “next big thing” in console graphics, for example, and should start appearing in mobile gaming as well.

The video doesn’t provide raw numbers, so we’ll repeat them here: The 8 Gen 2 offers up to 35% more CPU performance and up to 40% more efficiency, as well as up to 25% more GPU performance and up to to 45% higher efficiency (compared to 8 Gen 1).

Anyway, after the ray tracing the video dives into the audio topic, but to find out more there’s the second promotional video. The latest Snapdragon audio system natively supports spatial audio for a more immersive listening and gaming experience.

Speaking of audio, Bluetooth LE audio is supported (until now, Bluetooth sound was based on pre-LE technology). The new chip’s FastConnect 7800 system also offers lossless audio and a low latency mode (which drops to 48ms).

By the way, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is among the first chipsets to support Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be). You can’t buy Wi-Fi 7 routers yet, but once you do, your home phone’s internet speed will also be upgraded.
