Elon Musk’s SpaceX just bought Elon Musk’s xAI (which owns the Grok chatbot and the X social network formerly known as Twitter), in an all-stock reshuffle of Elon Musk’s companies that aren’t Tesla.
Unfortunately, the opportunity to rename the combined entity SpaceXai hasn’t been taken advantage of, at least not yet. Musk says the deal was made “to form the most ambitious, vertically integrated innovation engine on (and off) Earth, with artificial intelligence, rockets, space Internet, direct mobile communications, and the world’s leading real-time information and free speech platform.”

Space is the next frontier for your X posts, or something
Musk promises that in the future we will have “space-based artificial intelligence,” “a million satellites operating as orbital data centers,” and that humanity will become a Kardashev II-level multi-planetary civilization, “a civilization capable of harnessing the full power of the Sun while supporting AI-driven applications.” For all this, SpaceX’s Starship will (at some undetermined point in the future) launch hourly with a payload of 200 tons per flight, carrying “millions of tons to orbit and beyond every year.”
Musk also claims that “within 2 to 3 years, the cheapest way to generate AI-based computations will be in space.” Or at least he hopes so, since he would practically have a monopoly on it. Of course, none of this should be taken very seriously, since in Musk’s case most of what he says is aimed at increasing the value of his companies’ shares, and there is no reason why any of this is an exception. We’ll also spare you the “factories on the moon” part of the press release: If you like science fiction, head to the Source below to enjoy.
