Huawei just announced its high-end Mate 50 series: the vanilla Mate 50 and Mate 50 Pro, as well as a special edition RS Porsche Design, which not only has a special design but also boasts a periscope, a telephoto macro camera. in addition to the Pro features. But first let’s get the basics out of the way.

All three mates work with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, but there is no 5G connectivity as is usually the case with Huawei smartphones due to US sanctions. The Pro option also comes up to 512GB of RAM and may require an NM memory card of up to 256GB. As for the display, the Mate 50 Pro uses a 6.74-inch OLED with a 120 Hz refresh rate and 10-bit color depth with a resolution of 1212 x 2616 pixels. The strange resolution is due to the notch.

As for the camera, the Pro boasts a 50MP OIS main camera with a six-blade variable aperture, ranging from f / 1.4 all the way up to f / 4.0. The ultrawide camera is 13MP with f / 2.2 while the telephoto is 64MP, f / 3.5 with OIS, of course. The interesting thing is that the telephoto lens uses a RYYB sensor and can go up to 200x hybrid zoom while the effective range of the optical zoom is 3.5x.
The camera system is supported by a 10-channel multispectral sensor and a laser autofocus. The RS Porsche design replaces the 64MP telephoto lens with a 48MP periscope, a telephoto macro camera.

On the front, we have a 13MP ultrawide camera with f / 2.4 aperture and a 3D ToF sensor also used for advanced face unlock.
The whole unit is powered by a 4,700mAh battery with support for 66W wired and 50W wireless charging. An advanced emergency battery saving mode will allow you to keep the phone in standby for three hours even if it is only 1% left in the tank.
The color options are blue, orange, silver, black and purple and the latter two are available in leather and glass back variants. The Mate 50 RS only has blue and purple colors with a ceramic back.

Other great features include a satellite connection based on the so-called Beidou Satellite Message 3 protocol. Essentially it means you can send a message and a location even without cellular coverage.

As for the vanilla Mate 50, it reduces the 6.7-inch OLED display to 90Hz but retains roughly the same resolution and 10-bit color depth. The main and ultrawide cameras are the same (including variable aperture), but the telephoto lens is 12MP, f / 2.4, and interestingly enough, it offers an additional 5x optical zoom range.

The battery is slightly smaller – 4,460 mAh, although the same charging technologies are at hand.
The color options are identical and all devices work with the new HarmonyOS 3.0 software.
