Several years ago Huawei was cut off from the global supply chain, so the company had to scramble to find in-house replacements for all the parts needed to build a smartphone.

Perhaps the most interesting detail about the new Mate 60 series is that the company managed to restart production of the chipset: you can find some more details about the secret Kirin 9000 chip in this Huawei Mate 60 Pro teardown post.

But that’s not all, Huawei has also replaced the familiar Gorilla Glass with Kunlun glass (now in its second generation). Kunlun is Huawei’s formulation of ion-strengthened glass first introduced with the Mate 50 Pro Kunlun Glass Edition.

Now, the formula has been improved for the 2023 generation. How does it compare to Corning glass? Well, it’s not a direct comparison, but the drop test performed by PBKreviews shows promising results.

Note that the factory-applied plastic screen protector was removed for this test, it’s just the bare glass against concrete (and more). Additionally, the Mate 60 Pro has a quad-curved display, so there is little to no protection offered by the bezels if dropped face down.

This is a fairly informal test, and running over the phone with a car is certainly not standard procedure, but the Kunlun glass held up remarkably well.
