The rumors were true: Samsung’s flagship smartphone lineup finally supports rolling updates, with the release of the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25+, and Galaxy S25 Ultra. The Korean company has held out for many, many years and finally implemented the feature in the Galaxy A55 last year.

We assume it was meant to test the waters, and apparently everything went well with the A55, so now the feature has finally made its way to the S line. What “continuous updates” means is that your device will not be available for use for less time during the update.

This is because the update is applied while the device is powered on and is installed on a different partition than the one currently used by the operating system. Then, once the installation is complete, you will be prompted to restart your device, at which point it will boot into the newly updated software. This means that the reboot process itself is much faster, as it is basically just a little longer than a normal reboot.

Whereas before, without continuous updates, you had to wait for the software to install without being able to use your phone while it did so. So this is one of those little quality of life improvements that won’t be front and center on any store display, but are welcome nonetheless. The only strange thing is that it took Samsung more than eight years to get on the bandwagon (Google introduced rolling updates to Android in 2016).
