The Wireless Power Consortium (the administrators of the Qi wireless charging standard) certified the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 – officially supports Qi 2.1. However, the WPC is obscuring some information here.

For one, the device only supports the basic power supply profile (BP), which is almost certainly not the case. Galaxy Z Fold6 is listed as a support of the extended power supply profile (EPP) to 15 W and we plan that the sequel will do at least so much.

Qi 2.1 has introduced new profiles relating to cases: improvement of magnetic coverage power (MCPE) and magnetic coverage magnet (MCPM). Yes, both say “magnetic” and both have magnets, but differ in a key way. McPM is for phones with integrated magnets: further “Feedthrough” magnets in the case are used to improve the magnetic field for a stronger attack. McPE is for BPP and EPP telephones (i.e. those without magnets) and allows them to work in magnetic power profile mode (MPP), that is, the magnetic version of Qi.

We apologize for the alphabet soup, but the WPC is not helping the situation with its confused profiles. In any case, the page does not list anything above BP for Galaxy Z Fold7, which clearly is not true.

In the event that you are asking you what it is with the “SM-D637U” model number, it seems that the WPC does not use Samsung’s standard designations. For example, Z Fold6 is “SC-55E”, the Z Folding Special Edition is “SM-D269N” and Z Fold5 is “SM-D617S”, none of which corresponds to the numbers of Samsung “SM-F” “SM-F” for its folds.

The image of placeholder “coming” on the page clarifies that it is incomplete. But we are not hoping that Samsung adopts the entire experience of the magnet with the Galaxy Z Fold7 – it is more likely that the Galaxy S25 strategy with magnets will follow. Such cases use the MCPE profile, like this Spigen case, for example.
