Update January 8, 2025: We received a global version of the phone (as opposed to the China-specific one we had previously) and reran the entire set of tests, including benchmarks, plus shot some camera samples. The relevant test pages have been updated with the results of the global version and all conclusions and comments from the review now refer to the global model, unless otherwise explicitly stated. We’ve kept the original camera section, but added an extra page with direct comparisons between the two versions.

Introduction

Let’s let the Ultra-fication of the pros continue: the vivo X200 Pro receives the X100 Ultra’s superb telephoto lens, an upgrade in battery technology (and capacity), plus the obligatory new chipset. And since the X100 Ultra remains available only in China, we can’t wait to get that zooming action in a globally ready package like the X200 Pro.

The X200 Pro’s camera system is what we’re here for, first and foremost. The telephoto’s 3.7x 85mm-equivalent lens has a large 1/1.4-inch sensor and 200MP behind it, and the combination proved to be one of the best performers in the X100 Ultra (or is that just a very similar combination?). The Ultra won’t equip the next Pro with the 1-inch main camera, but with a new Sony 1/1.28-inch design that’s presumably just as good – we’ll see about that.

The ultrawide, meanwhile, comes directly from the X100 Pro: not particularly exciting hardware, but not too poor either. We would have appreciated seeing the Ultra’s selfie camera here, but the one we get appears to have been taken from the previous Pro instead.

From Ultra comes the silicon-carbon battery that offers better energy density than traditional graphite-based lithium-ion solutions. Vivo has been pretty generous with capacity too, the 6,000mAh number is among the highest in the category.

The X100 Ultra uses a Snapdragon, but pros have been taking advantage of Mediatek’s supply of high-end chips for a few generations now, and the on the X200 Pro – the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor (optical on the IP68, of course).

Unboxing of the vivo X200 Pro

The X200 Pro gets Vivo’s usual high-end treatment and ships in the familiar large, thick, boxy, black cardboard box. Inside you’ll find a 90W charger and a USB-AC cable.

A basic protective back cover is also included – it’s not the softest or grippiest around, nor does it look great, if we’re talking about the smooth blue one that came with our Chinese unit. The clear silicone one we got with the international version is, admittedly, a little grippier. Both are decent enough to keep your phone safe.
