YouTube viewed through a desktop browser still shows so-called “overlay ads” which, as the name suggests, appear at the top of the video (at the bottom edge). These are annoying and the YouTube team agrees too, so they are about to be deleted.

Starting April 6, this type of ad will no longer be shown to users. And it will no longer be available as an option in YouTube Studio. However, YouTube expects there will be only a limited impact for most creators as these ads are replaced with “other ad formats”.

YouTube will stop showing overlay ads on desktop starting next month

The overlay ads used to appear on mobile devices as well, but they were taken down a while ago and no one has complained about their removal. However, it’s unclear what will replace these desktop ads. Presumably things will focus on pre, mid and post-roll announcements.
