Here's some context:

I work in a convenience store (for more than a year now) and once every three months, my boss would give me food items (cereals, crackers, chips and canned food), but all of them are expired. Other items that are waaay past the date he just throws away.

Obviously I had to accept them since it's free food and I'm not in a situation to be picky. I have yet to get sick from eating them so I guess it's still safe 😅

Anyway, is it the same with you guys? Do you still eat food that is past its expiration date?

all depends on what item and how long :)

frozen chips ?
again if you freeze things before expiration they are usually fine :)
I've never thought to keep them in the fridge, I just store them in a big plastic container box.

I'm going to try it out now to see if they get preserved better.

No, I don't know where I learned it but I'm really picky when it comes to that. So most of it depends on what kind of food it is - but it's like a barrier for me. I know it's weird
and I would love to live dangerous enough to do it 😂 but I don't throw anything away. Normally we only buy what we definitely can eat before that but sometimes that just doen't do the trick
so I just bring them to my workplace and we give it to our residents or a co-worker takes it. I don't like wasting things.

Welp as long as it doesn't taste funny, and you don't get sick then it's a win for me 👌

One advice though, you do NOT want to eat expired dairy products, take it from experience.
I definitely learned that I shouldn't drink expired milk from experience. I almost never left the toilet from how bad it made me sick 🤢

And I would be a happy co-worker if you gave me free food even if it is expired 😊

You can't starve in my workplace. I work part-time as a geriatric nurse and in our place we always eat with our residence - and the kitchen is always opened for the workers.
So you could basically just work there and have no food at home.

Depends on what it is. I would never do it with fish, or meat (unless it's been one day max). But I've done it with yoghurts, juice, muffins, frozen pizza a couple times, and things like that

How much time are you given to eat while at work? I'm always curious about that because I'm the slowest eater 😂

That's reasonable. Meat, fish, fruits and vegetables should never be eaten expired. It's way too exposed to the elements, it could end up contaminated too.

Really though, I can't help but feel bad if I just throw away the food my boss has given me. I have no right to be wasteful 😅

In the morning it depends on how fast we work and what we do. But in general, it is 30min to 1 hour and 30min. It varies.
To lunch, if you want to eat with the residents it is 10 to 20 min but if you eat after them it's 30 min to 1 hour.
For dinner, it is 40 min to 1 hour. Tea-Time is like 1 hour - We have cake or cookies there.
But you can also eat something small in-between. Or you can take everything home.
But a good thing about my workplace is also we have special events like the "Summer Party" were we have free food. Or yesterday we had a small Christmas party (yes, it's not even December)
and look at what we got:

COOKIES EVERYWHERE!!!!

There is also a rule on our station that says whenever someone has a vacation they need to bring sweets - either when they come back or when they leave.
The house is also offering a party once a year - Staff only. We get free food and drinks.
And we use the donation we get for at least one fancy dinner every year - just the staff of my station. Last year we paid 800euros for a medieval Christmas dinner. That was awesome.
So you CAN'T starve.

Yo, your workplace is so dope. I've never seen that much cookies in my entire life. I hope your co-workers are into sweets and pastries 🍬🍪
