Do I need a specific app to read e-books or is there a certain file I need to put downloaded e-books in to?

You can use this app / mod.
FReader: All Formats Reader 3.5.0 Hacked (New)

It supports all formats from eBooks. And audio books too.

You only have to select the folder in wich your books are and then you can start reading.

Personally I love Google play books. You can open almost any format with it, and it allows you to store your ebooks on your account so if you're like me and read on multiple devices, it carries over your progress.
