Name of the movie you are reviewing: Encanto (Disney)
Encanto is Disney's latest feature animation film, set in Columbia in the year 1950. It follows the protagonist, fifteen year old Mirabel, and her struggles to feel as special as her family; who all have magical powers.
Review:
Another tear-jerker masterpiece, in story, animation and design. The message encapsulating breaking free of dysfunctional family roles and dynamtics, something dear to my heart. On the surface all the characters seem to fit perfect archetypes; The Golden Child, The Strict Grandmother, The Older Responsible Sister, The Outcast and The Black Sheep. However we quickly learn they are still their own people, with complicated feelings and a uniting deep love of family despite their differences. Many of the songs are stuck in my head on loop, including "Surface Pressure", "What Else Can I Do?", "We Don't Talk About Bruno" and "Dos Oruguitas". It's honestly kind of incredible how many of these songs are amazing by themselves, yet alone all for the same movie.
Not to mention a beautiful ode to the culture of Columbia, as the composer and song-writer Lin Manuel Miranda said; "A love letter to Columbia itself." I have my own gripes about Disney as a corporation and their often cut-throat business practices, but Disney Animations never fail to deliver and deserve reverence in spades. The music is of course, incredible, as Lin Manuel Miranda never disappoints either. However I will say Mirabel's own song wasn't as strong as the others. If you loved Coco or Raya and The Last Dragon, I bet you'll love this one as well. We can never have enough movies celebrating unique cultures.
Would you recommend this to other users? If you loved Coco, you will love Encanto. The music and visuals are wonderful to behold.
